PLACES: DESIGN CHARRETTE

Places Projects are a small practice that design creative learning environments for young children. The success of their design is the result of their hands on collaboration with the users; primary school children.

Having discussed their recent involvement with St Mary's CE Primary School, we deliberated how we might further expand on their re-development of the playground. Reflecting on our personal recollections of childhood we outlined the importance of “undefined spaces”. Spaces that are undefined lack hierarchy, which means no area is deemed of greater importance, which can be critical in a playground environment. Furthermore, undefined spaces mean children use their imagination; a myriad of textures, sounds and smells to allow their creativity to flourish.

PRECEDENTS USED:

Stoss Landscape Urbanism: Safe Zone Grand Metis, Quebec, Canada. An undualting ground under the canopy of trees, creating an environment that allows the child to act more freely due to the qualities of the material used.
